I just recently found some little swords hiding in the tank, and might like to try raising them to adulthood for my group. The question I have though, is if I let them survive and they end up breeding with their own parents, won't that be unhealthy genetically? I don't think I'll keep that many, and if they do inbreed I won't help those fry survive.
I have one of those critter-keepers that's about 3 to maybe 3 1/2 gallons I could set up with some floating hornwart, but I don't have another filter. Would it be alright to have this setup without a filter? I can always do a decent water change on something like that. Just let me know whether or not what I'm thinking would be safe or not. Thanx in advance.

I've never been able to catch the little buggers. Anyway, I usually just keep them in the tank and if the adults don't eat them, they will be fine.

the fish should be fine in the tank they are in if there is plenty of hiding places also interbreeding with fish is a bit different than interbreeding with higher level but yes there could possibly be problems but they should be fine with interbreeding with others in the tank.

Thanx

When should I know when to isolate the female? I can't really tell with two of my females if they are pregnant at all, but one is light colored enough to see some transparency. How swollen do swordtail females get normally?

It you have plenty of plants and hidings spaces, you do not need to remove your females. I find this to cause more stress on the females in the long run. I find it easier to capture the fry instead. Either by using a syphon hose, or a net. But with some of my fish, such as my endlers, guppies and hets I tend to let them stay with the adults. I like keeping hornwort in the tank with the fish. This gives the fry a great place to hide as well as the females giving birth. The fry feed off the infusia on the plants.
As how big do the females get while pregnant? it is very noticeable. The get very round and they look to about to burst.
