I have just purchased a 20g tank w/ the intent of growing freshwater aquatic plants; I already have: two lights with the proper wattage per gallon, a glass tank cover, a 30g Aqua Clear water filter, Stress Coat, Stress Zyme, an air pump, hose, wall bubbler and the proper soil. I put in the bag of soil and there is about an inch or two of soil on the bottom of the tank. I also installed the filter and changed the carbon filter to the different white filter that I was told to do by the clerk at the aquarium store I went to (I can't find the box so I can't remember the name but I was told I should change that level of the filter for aquatic plants.) I filled the tank with water and installed the filter, which is functioning just fine as far as I can tell. Next I put 10ml of Stress Coat, I felt the instructions for the Stress Zyme was unclear as to if I was to put it in right after the Stress Coat or not so I waited a day and then put 10ml of the Stress Zyme into the tank. I am aware the the tank should take about a week to become conditioned but I have a few questioned that are unanswered by my internet and forum searches.
First, the lighting; I decided against a lid and adopted for a glass covering and a separate two bulb Coral Life light...how far above the tank should it be on average in regards to water temp.?
Second, the water, it's brown, chocolate milk brown; I was told this would happen but it is now 30+ hours after I installed everything and it is still very murky. I am not worried per say but rather wondering what the general time frame is for the water to settle, I am in no rush but I am curious.
Third, what have I missed in terms of what I need and what I need to do.
I am going step by step and I know there is much to two beyond this so in addition I was wondering if anyone had any good links that would give me some solid information. Thanks a lot.
