I have been having major problems with a 5 gallon. I have had several different fish in. Anything but goldfish die. I bought my daughter a beta and put in it and his color got awful and I knew I was about to lose him. I went and bought a 1 gallon set up and got it going and dropped him in. Within a day, his color came back and he is eating fine. :D I tested the 5 gallon before I put the beta in and it seemed fine. The nitrates were a little high, but not leathal. There was an algea problem in the tank for she never turns the light off. We are getting better with it with the 1 gallon. Since setting up the small tank, I have washed the 5 gallon thouroughly, again. Along with the filter and heater. I have let them set a week to dry and am now ready to set it back up. I discarded the gravel and decorations. So I guess what I am asking is would the gravel and other things hold chemicals or whatever is killing my fish? This is the first time I am setting back up with fresh garvel. What I am wanting to do is set the 5 gallon back up and use as a nursery with my guppies and platties. By putting the very pregnant mommas in there and then take them back out after giving birth. That way I can save more babies. My wife works at a small school and each class is going to set up an aquarium and I plan to supply them with fish. So the more I can breed the less it will cost. Sounds like a plan anyway.

hmmmm, when you wash out the tank, what do you use? Water? Soap? What did you do differently with the 1g, than the 5g?

1 gallon, how big is that

I don't think I did anything different with the one gallon. I rinsed the gravel and through it together. I used water from my 55 gallon. I knew I needed to be careful with adding chemicals. No need to be REAL careful with dechlorinaters when dealing with so much water. But with one one gallon to play with....gotta be particular. I am thinking there was something with the gravel. It had been through several changes of fish. I had some of the marble looking rocks added to my 55 and we had some in a bowl that was more of a decoration, not an aquarium thing. My wife added them to the small tank and I think with them not being sterile....it may have been the culprit. But I just don't know. I have the 55 gallon, my son has a 29 gallon that we have no problems with. Now this one gallon seems as easy as it can be. But this 5 gallon has kicked my butt since we got it.

When I wash the tank or any other parts or decorations, I have always put them in the dishwasher and double rinsed. Then after they are done, I let them thouroughly dry and before setting up I rinse again with cold tap water. I feel like I get a real good rinse.

Never Ever use detergent to clean aquariums!!
