I need to get a new filter for my 35 gallon because none of the pet stores in my area sell the replacement cartridges for the ones I got.

I don't wanna spend more then $90 dollars (Thats Australian dollars by the way). Can anyone recommend some that nearlly every pet shop sells the cartridges for?

Would prefer hang ons but some might not fit my aquarium, so cannisters would be good as well.

Use a sponge. You dont really need to pay 5bucks for a sponge with carbon you dont even need.

There is simply no short answer to this. Basically the best advice is to get a filter that's rated to almost twice the size of your tank. (So if it says it's for tanks up to say, 55 gallons or so, you're doing well.)

HOB or canister - matter of choice.

As far as brands, any of the major ones are as good as each other. The rest comes down to people's personal opinions and brand loyalties.

For HOBs - Penguin/Emperor, Aquaclear, Tetra Whisper are all great choices each as good as the other in all honesty.

For canisters - Rena, Fluval, Marineland, Eheim. (Personally I think Eheim is way overrated and overpriced but plenty of people will highly disagree with me.)

So a normal house hold sponge will do? Can anyone else comment on this?

I think what Tip was referring to is you could probably take the frame of your cartridge, ripo off the old stuff, and use some bulk filter pad cut to fit the size of the cartridge frame and attach it with rubber bands...if you still want a new filter, get an AquaClear....you can put anything in them and they have excellent flow.

Ok this is what i've done I cut open the cartridges and emptied all the carbon out of them one seems to be flowing good but the other is still overflowing a little because its a different type of cartridge.
