Ok i had convicts, dempseys, and firemouths in my 125 gallon tank before then i decided i wanted to go with tiger barbs, neons, zebra, and some cory catfish but after i switched to them i decided that i really like the cichlids alot better than the community fish. What do ya think would happen if i went out and bought some convicts and firemouths and added them in with the community fish i have now would any survive with the cichlids? What should i do? Thanks in advance.

The barbs are actually the only ones which I would guess would stand a chance against C/A Cichlids, and even then I am not sure. You don't say which types of Cories, but I imagine you are referring to C. aeneus, C. paleatus, C. julii, or any one of the other most commonly-sold ones. None of these get to be big enough to stand their ground (and the bigger ones are usually too delicate, anyway).

I'm going to assume that you mean Zebra Danio (Brachydanio rerio) by Zebras. If this is the case, then they will be speedy enough to stay away from the Cichlids most of the time, but they are oft-sold as feeder fish because they are quite tasty to the Cichlids.

Neons are also feeder fish, and are easy targets for the cichlids. Unfortunately, the bottom line is that I do not believe that any of your current inhabitants will survive the arrival of new C/A Cichlids. I have heard that new Cichlids will SOMETIMES leave prior occupants of their tank alone, but this is not a common occurence, and is usually limited to dwarves sold as community fish. Cons and Firemouths are not community fish (unless you want an impressive community of semi-evil fish), and could not be trusted to behave as such.

Best of luck with your decision,

Matthew

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully the tiger barbs atleast survive because i like them the best. Any other opinions on what they think might happen if i add those ca cichlids? Thanks in advance.

my brother has a 55g with 3 cons and 2 firemouths in it right now and they killed a bunch of zebra danios, so they are not realy fast enough cause they have to sleep sometime. but i would say that almost all if not all fish will eventually be killed by the cons/firemouths.

Yeah you're playing with fire there, my friend! It's just a matter of time until strange disappearances or dismemberments will take place.

i have firemouths, severums and synspilum with black tetras, corys and 2 clown loaches. I had them for a year now, and everything is going fine.

To be succint: Firemouths OK, convicts no-no

the convict would be pretty much guaranted to make the comm. tank messy.
