Since I wasn't having any luck with cichlids I have decided to go with Oranda's. I bought them (2) a blue and an orange this weekend at a great new store in Charlotte NC called Fintastic. Right now they are both around
3-4 inches. I would love to know any advice or tips on keeping these guys healthy. I have also changed to live plants on the advice of the guy at the store. The tank looks much more realistic. I know these guys can get big in the future but I hope they can thrive in the 29G for now. I have upgraded to a BioWheel by marine land and also have a bubble "dirt monster" and the older Whisper 40. Can I leave all three running for extra oxygenation??? The orandas seem to love all the bubbles. I also added some holey rock.

I am feeding nutra max and veggie flakes.

Any advice would be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance,

Heather

Goldfish need lots of oxygen and they seem to enjoy playing in the bubbles. As for the live plants, depending on what you have they may enjoy snacking on them or uprooting them. They are mass waste producers so try and do frequent water changes. I feed mine veggie flakes, shrimp pellets, goldfish crisps and peas.

I have two too, red..... and there's no way I could keep plants in with these guys. I keep the temp at 77 and feed them once a day, and they are growing at an incredible rate.... good luck on yours, they are cuties :)

I currently have 6 goldfish in a 125: 1 lionhead, 2 orandas, 1 ryukin, 1 fantail, 1 veiltail. You can keep plants with them, but only specific plants. Java ferns and anubias are working for me right now. I first put two java ferns in, and they tore one apart. They didn't eat it, just dismantled it. Now I've added 3 more small java ferns and one anubias. If I can get more anubias, I'll probably add 2 or 3 more ($10/each hurts!)

Here's a pic of 2 of our fish, the veiltail and the ryukin:

There's an anubias in the background.
