Hi everyone.

My friend has just given me two clown fish (percula/common) as he has just moved house today and didnt plan his fish tank move.

I already have a true pair of perculas in the tank and was wondering if the other two would be ok

the tank is 67 uk gallons

i read somewhere they will kill each other - is this correct or do u think in this size of tank it would be ok?

cheers

david

Being honest, i would not...its quite a small tank to have 4 clown fish...it maybe slightly different, or less agression if there was two anemene's in the tank as seperate homes..

Sorry to put a bit of a downer on it...See what other people's opinions are mate...

They will be Fine Imo
First off they wont right off the bat "kill each other like a gang" Let them out an see how they act. if they dont look to settle down in like a day or two start looking for another place for hem to live.
i think your more safe on this one

Is this something you have done yourself?

No, and yes I am a Newb, to fish keeping, less than a year. but my two percs fight all the time and i know i have read manytimes that it may take a year or so for them to pair up.

All i am saying is. If David is in a bind with fish in hands i would risk putting them in the tank unless he had a place for them..
They may Bicker a little but its worth the try untill he can find them a propper home.

I added a mated pair of percs to my 100 gallon tank and I had a single immature perc already and they were fine.

All three are doing just fine, they tend to hang out together, I think the mated pair have adopted the little guy, who knows.

It is important to note though that IME, it is a much larger tank, there was only a single in it before and he was small, at least half the size of the male from the mated pair i added, so I am not sure that it could apply to the situation you are asking about here.

Me personally, I don't think I would add a pair of clowns to a tank that already had a mated pair, especially without a nem or in a tank that size, just my opinion though.

Are the other two clowns you got from your friend a mated pair?

yes the new ones are mated - i have released them in and seem ok for now - ill have to keep an eye on them - 2 seahorses have just arrived!

im struggling here - im getting free fish but could wreck the tank!

I would be careful with that advice chucke, remember that clowns are cousins of the little devils known as damsels, so they can have a nasty side! Experimenting with an educated guess is one thing, but just dumping them in not knowing if the other two are mated or not... trouble. Mated pairs can be nasty especially if competing for real estate to possibly host.

Good luck with whatever you decide David.
