Need RO water but cant afford it? Try culligan!

Just a heads up to anyone who doesn't know.. Culligan rents an RO system for $20 a month. A good one too.. I just rented one for $23 a month that does 30GPD+.

They service it and they install it.. the only cost to you is the price of the filters and Culligan says these will last 1.5years (probably the specific system Igot, one of the more expensive ones)

It's good for those of us with horrible water.. in the end I'll be paying faaar less per gallon than any other method.

I have mine hooked up to the "Aquarium Pharmaceutical Tap water filter", attached to RO it will probably last 1000 gallons.. and the 30GPD means I get a steady trickle to my aquarium once the tank is gone, a method I prefer over pouring it in with a bucket.

So if you're worried about water quality and can't afford an expensive RO system give Culligan a call.

Umm- ro systems are not really all that pricey. You can find them on Ebay for $100 or less????? I passed up a used ro/di system 50gpd for $50- turned out I really didnt need it.

I don't trust those sub $100 units on eBay..

and I'm poor, anyone in my financial position (college student renting his own place working a part time job ) would understand why $20 a month is better than $100 up front..

Not only that, they fix anything that goes wrong with it. When it's tmie to buy a filter in a year in a half (guaranteed filter life for all of them, yay) they will come out and install the filters for me (it's not that hard to do.. but why not let them do it for me?)

and DI usually one of the last stages in some of the better RO systems. RO membranes miss *some* stuff and the DI usually finishes it off.

I had the DI filte ranyways. If the RO membrane gets rid of 98% and the DI system gets rid of 1%.. well, why not? Not costing me anything.. I'm sure this single half-used cartridge will last quite a while hooked up to an RO unit, probably as long as the membrane itself.

and i foudn out the water coming out of my house far exceeds legal limits. High amounts of lead, copper, arsenic and a crapload of Calcium, phosphates, nitrates (at 60). Total hardness is somewhere between 500-700 and I can't even imagine what the total count for TDS is.

Ro water is not really a need unless you are keeping discus or breeding a couple other types of fish and even then you can get by without it. I bred angels with regular tap water....

actually the ro unit comes in handy if the water is really bad.
I know angelfish breeders who have water that is too high in minerals..specifically iron.it is unsuitable for even keeping fish as this breeder discovered when highly prized angel pairs started perishing for no apparent reason.
eventually this breeder stopped keeping fish until a better solution was found as the ro units clogged rapidly with this water.

but generally that statement you made is true. usually not needed unless breeding some fish .

You are adding something back to the water though right? RO/DI water is far too pure for most fish. There are salt mixes sold to put things right again as well as some great homemade recipies which probably aren't too pricey.

Yeah, the tap water filter came with additives.

my fish and plants do seem healthier since i started using better water.

Anyways, wanted to add that I live in a small town in Indiana. "Terre Haute" (Where they executed Timothy McVeigh) So uh, yeah, don't ever drink the tap water here.

The water company does these water tests and swears everything is just below or at the legal limit (except lead, they're honest about that, in 3/4 homes lead is a good deal above the legal limit) but in every home i've tested (3 so far, my older house, a 15 year old house and a 25 year old house, all in good areas) the water is the same.. just bad..
This town had a lot of strip mining so I think that has a lot to do with it. It's also a farming town. It's an older town, poorer, so I'm guessing our water system is made up of mostly copper and lead pipes.. the one coming out the ground at my house is copper.

After all of the water testing I finally realized why I don't ever have disease problems with my fish. After 3 years I just didn't care, if a fish in a store had Ich or some fungus growing on it, I knew it would die off within days of adding it to my aquarium and wouldn't spread. Guess that's the only negative of having clean water. (and it's not the chlorine, I think it's the high amount of copper I had in my water)
