personal preference....in my old tank i had one, in the new one i dont..i just went with average of about 2 inches all over the bed...

do deep sand beds trap the water and cause dead spots?
or is it just more place for denitrifying bacteria to grow?

another note if u keep the rock on the back of the glass make sure that there is flow back there. i have a powerhead blowing behind my rock wall because it is huge. u dont want low or zero flow back there.
The fish i already own and want to add to this reef tank are ocelariis pair, yellow tang , 2 baby blue tangs, flame hawk, coral beauty,diamond goby and a valentini puffer..... I understand the puffer could become a problem but he has lived with many inverts over the years such as clams, anemone shrimp, hermits. The only thiing he has eaten was a mantis shrimp lol i call him the mantis hunter. so with his track record do you think i could incorporate him?

if the puffer seems good then give it a try...but fish can change. the shrimp usually are just helpful in cleaning the nem but clownfish will usually chase them off or kill them.
I thought you may have commented on the amount of fish germanman, do you think to many as i kinda feel this way.

lol hahah ur talking to the guy that "over stocked" sounds fine...just keep it clean and running smooth with enough swim room and u should be good.
awesome mate, i undertsnd the blue tangs get real big real fast buti rescued them from certain death at a lfs. They were painfully thin that you could see there inards and bones plus they had white spot.
