So i recently set up my 29 gallon, about a month ago and have been putting in some corals and things. My water parameters are nitrates and nitrites and ammonia are very close to zero, PH is 8.3 and salinity is 1.024, my only problem is phosphate from the tap water i added in when i first set up the tank, and that is around 10. I recently added phosguard like yesterday so it should be doing its job. Now, the tank inhabitants are doing great but my 6 line wrasse and a cleaner shrimp. First the wrasse, i have noticed it has been getting very large lips with what looks like a white mass inside the top part of his mouth and also a white dot on his top fin, probably ich? Anyway he is eating like a pig and not showing any signs that his mouth is bothering him. Now, on to the shrimp. I recently purchased him, a couple of days ago. He is residing in the back of the tank. He was eating really good when i fed the fish at night. But today, i found him lying on his back and moving very slowly, then he moved a little bit and is face down and not moving. I acclimated him inside his bag for about 2 hours when i got him and he was doing fine for the past couple of days, what is the matter????? Just now a fish passed by him and picked at him and he did not move it at all . I am new to the forums and so im not sure what else to write, please help me! Thank you

I read the text below at this link.

See what you think. Are you using the PhosGuard correctly?

PhosGuard™is best used in smaller quantities and changed frequently. In an environment with an excessively high phosphate reading, PhosGuard™will exhaust rapidly (4 – 5 days). Place the product in a high flow rate area and test your phosphate levels, changing as needed. When you see that your level is below 0.2 ppm (mg/L) leave that portion of PhosGuard™in the filter. PhosGuard™may yellow somewhat as it picks up organics, but that is not an indicator of exhaustion for phosphate removal. Continue to test weekly for phosphate until you see it begin to rise again. You will then know that it is time to change the PhosGuard™. If you have low levels of phosphate the PhosGuard™will absorb the silicate in your system. It’s inert and safe to leave in your filter.

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate "very close to zero"... how close? If ammonia and nitrite aren't 0, then no livestock should have been added in to your tank yet. If you still have ammonia or nitrite, the tank is still cycling and all your livestock will be stressed by it at minimum, if they don't end up dieing.

If your cleaner shrimp is motionless and didn't react to being picked at by a fish, that's a pretty good sign that he's either dead or very close to it. Can you see if he's breathing or not? There'd be a small filament whipping up and down horizontally near his head if he's breathing.

How much live rock do you have? Running a skimmer? Deep sand bed, shallow sand bed, bare bottom? What's your tap water quality like? Any problems with metals contamination?

Please list all the inhabitants of your tank (corals, fish, inverts, etc.).

i have 62 lbs of live rock, a 2 inch sand bed, and it has no readings for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite i just got the water tested at a lfs and my own testing as well. I have an odysea skimmer that i modified with an air pump so it works pretty good, plus a millenium 2000 for other filtration. I currently buy the water i put into the tank for top offs and water changes. My shrimp is dead now, just an update. As for the water quality, i have no idea, ill have to look into that.

My livestock is a yellow tang, i know im going to be burned for that but im friends with the lfs owner and can give him back once he is too big, a 6 line wrasse which isnt doing good and 2 sand sifting stars, plus a clean up crew, hammer coral, frogspawn, xenia some mushrooms and a green star polyp, They are all very small frags. As of right now, everything is doing very well, no problems with corals acting funny. My lighting is 2-65w 10k and actinic PC.

I've used Phosguard before. Should work well if you follow the instructions.

What kind of shrimp is it (just curious)? It's hard to say what the matter is. Are you positive it isn't a molt? Sounds funny but when I first saw mine I thought my shrimp was dead! Could have also been sick from the LFS. Does it perk up when you feed the tank?

sounds like fungal infection and ich. make sure the ammonia and trates are o and dont use phosguard its leaches aluminum and doesnt work very well at all.
do a water change to be sure, and i hope it works out better for u next time

I was also thinking a fungal infection but we can only simply guess at this point. Can you get a picture at all?

it was a skunk cleaner shrimp i think. No it did not molt, i have had them before in a much larger tank. This one for sure died and yes he was eating when i fed the fish at night, he would book out of the back of the tank and grab the food that was floating on the ground? i have no idea why it died

Sorry about that. Yeah sometimes they just seem to die for no apparent reason. I had one die about 3 weeks ago- no clue why but the others I have are fine.

How's the wrasse doing- can you happen to get pictures? How are the ammonia and nitrite levels coming along?
