Hi I have a 180 gallon and a 20 gallon salt water fish tank .

In my 180 gallon fish tank i have green algae in my tank I am useing live sand (I live in the bahamas) the rocks i have in there are rocks from off the beach thats been in my tank for a year now but the sand is new I cleaned it out . Its been set up for about a month now with just 3 fish in it. I am going to get coral and other stuff right out of the sea. We can do that here.
But this algae is getting on me what can i do?
The 20 galon i have anenome and clown and 1 yellow tail damsil got algae to but not has bad.

Hello there and welcome to the forums...

What sort of water are you using for the tank? is it tap or Reverse Osmosis water?

What lighting do you have? and what is your lighting schedule?

Green algae usually blossoms with a high nutrient level in the tank. It feeds of Light, NitrATES and Phosphates...Can you post your tank parameters for us to look over?

And we can take it from there..

Niko

thanks for the reply so fast

Hi
I am useing real saltwater and added about 10-15 gallons of rain water.
Everthing checks out fine I tested it.
The light i have are the Aqualight plus dual compact fluorescent with moon lights. Which has 2 96w 10,000 k, 2 96w 50/50, 2 96w true acthic 03 blue compact flourcent lamp, 3/4 w lunar blue moon glow led lamps made by corallife.

Wow Free LFS right off the beach huh? Talk about some big $ savings...

Try clean up crew. I'm not sure if you have these guys already, but turbo snails and hermit crabs might help. But like Niko says above, one of the biggest reasons for algae problem is high nutrient. You may be overfeeding... If not, you may need more frequent water change.

Rain water is not really an ideal water to be using for the tank as i am sure you can imagine all the pollutants we have in the air..You should be using reverse osmosis water..

When you say you are using saltwater, are you refering to water directly from the sea?

Please post you tank results for us though as we do need to know to help you diagnose your algae problems..
