Hi I was thinking (well my parents are) of going and getting salt water fish. My mom just wants one fish a Volitan Lionfish. I was wondering what would be need and how big of tank and equipment. Me and my family have never gone out of freshwater and could use some help. I dont know anything about saltwater Ive only delt with fresh. So if you could give me some useful info on equipment for the VLF then I would greatly appreciate thanks ahead of time.

GER1023, go to General Marine and search for the "Lionfish Tank?" thread. That's got a lot of good info for a first time salty and talks about how to keep a lionfish well.

Ok I didnt find it could you like put the actual site on there the onlything about lionfish I find Is about someones sick lionfish.

Thanks Dawg I really needed the info Just sorry I didnt respond sooner dont really get on here to much anymore. Thanks again for the info.

Hey I printed and read the info on the thread Dawg and well I still need more info. The one they talk about in the thread above is for a small lionfish. I was looking at getting a Volitan Lionfish which say's they get 15" according to liveaquaria.com but I dont trust there tank sizes on there. I was wondering what would be a good tank size also would they be good alone. I read the other thread saying about live rock. Ive seen them before but was wondering how much would be needed for a fish of this size. I would also like to know what equipement like names brands would you get for this fish. Thanks Ahead of Time.

I would go for a 90 for one lion fish. The dimensions are important--you want it to be deep front to back, so the fish can turn around comfortably. A 120 may work for a pair, but it would depend on the fish, some volitans are very laid back, others are territorial.

I would go with at least 100 lbs of live rock, but the good news is you could start with less and add pieces gradually. The lion will want a cave of overhang, so rock that you can stack stably is important.

Brand names--not good with that. I use Instant Ocean salt and aqua clear power heads. Ebo Jager heaters. Mag drive pump, but that will be replaces with something else--probably a direct drive pump.

Thanks alot OG (aka Orion Girl). Now that I know that now I could look and see how much its going to cost me. Thanks alot.
