I am new to this board but have been doing lots of reading here for a month or two now. I have a 30 gallon tank that is cycled and is running fine. Why I am writing is because I am looking at starting a new 10 gallon tank and have no idea what to put into it. I have guppies in my 30 gallon tank and would like to try something different in the 10 gallon. I would like to stay away from gold fish. I was thinking about a betta but I wouldn't know what else to put in with it. What would be good fish to keep in this size of tank?

Thanks for any help anyone will give

Oh soooo many options...

Maybe a school of neons or cardinals and plants?
Or...a group of cories can be fun, should work with the betta or a single dwarf gourami?
A school of some larger tetras (lemon, black skirt)?

There's really a ton of possibilities. Start by checking out your water parameters if you don't already know and narrow down your search by what species would be happy in your tap water.

I forgot to put water conditions

Sorry, and thank you for reminding me.

The water I have is extremely hard but has good buffering capability. The pH is 7.4-7.6 out of the tap. If I could work within this it would be the most simple. Most species I have looked at require soft water and an acidic pH so I need something that can handle the opposite end of the spectrum. So like I said before, I just don't know where to go with it.

You're pH really isn't too bad and most fish would adapt to it just fine...but anyway, a pair of Kribs (Pelvicachromis pulcher) maybe or some of the dwarf shelldwellers (Neolamprologus multifasciatus) from Lake Tanganyika. You could probable do a pair of blue rams.

Anything in particular you're going for?

Well...

I really don't know what is out there as far as fish. I could sit on the internet or go to a pet store and look for hours and not be able to decide where to go with the tank. You have given me some good ideas and I am starting to research some of the cichlids you named. I never have thought of trying cichlids because I was scared of killing an exotic fish, hence the guppies in the 30 gallon tank. Thank you for your help.

One of the things I'd do while you are researching is to buy a hang on back filter for the 10 gal and run it on the 30. That way it would get a head start on the bacteria colony. It would also be a good excuse to go to lfs and view fish!:)
