I just found a huge worm in my overflow. I was hoping someone could help me ID it. I don't want to get rid of it, if it is beneficial to the reef or sand. It retracts into itself (weird). Fully retracted it is about 3.5" long and about .5" thick. When it extends it is about 7" long, fat on one end and thins out at the other end to the thickness of a pencil line. It looks like a night crawler until it extends. As it extends, the fat end stays tan and the thin end has brown stripes around the body. Has anyone seen one of these? If so, good or bad. Thanks for any help you can give. You just have to love the incredible world of aquatics.

If I were to guess, I'd say a peanut worm (sipunculan) or a spoonworm (echiuran). There are a few photos here.

All these weird things are a huge part of the fun of this hobby. Never know what phylum will crawl out of the rocks.

Again, it's Mogurnda to the rescue.

Thanks Dave,
You called it. Peanut worm. This is a facinating hobby. Back in the early 70's (giving away my age), I tried a saltwater tank. Invested alot of money and lost everything. We didn't have the knowledge of the hobby that we have today. I went fresh water and stayed that way until 3 months ago. I am hooked. You never know what is going to come out of the rock next. My wife who wanted nothing to do with a reef tank sits and stares for hours.

Thanks again for your help. Your always there when we need you.

Manfish,

Fran
