Need your opinions on a smaller dog

not a dog but get a pygmy or mini pig its very small and is suprisingly clean doesnt shead really atol

The language doesn't matter. I had a GSD that only knew his commands in Hungarian. You can use any word you want for a specific action. If you said "peanut" every time your dog sat down, and rewarded him for hit- he'd sit every time he heard you say it. What you can do is hand commands along with voice commands- ask your trainer. For example, a common sit hand command would be to start with your hand outstretched palm up, then flex your elbow to bring your hand to your shoulder- this is commonly used because people who approach your dog will do so with their hand outstretch, but if the dog gets to be too much, or the person gets fearful, they will pull their hand up and away from your dog, so without even knowing it, they will be telling your dog to sit. These are the little tips you will learn from your trainer and from reading books.

The most important thing about training a dog is timing, timing, timing, along with proper corrections. Some basic classes with a professional, even just one, is mandatory IME so he/she can teach YOU how to teach your dog. Once you get the hang of how their brains work, you can do it on your own, but you need the training to get your technique right. They will tell you initially that one person in the house has to be responsible for the training when you first start, but your whole family has to be in the loop so that the other people in the house aren't accidentally undoing your hard work or confusing the dog.

Yes! please do update us on what you guys decide to get! All of my dogs are trained for off leash since I live in the country. I can let them off at the park and they can run a pretty good distance away, but one whistle brings them all back to me. It's quite a sight to see actually, 4 dogs running towards you at full pace at once lol. I have one in particular that goes on walks with me off leash, that has learned to stay right next me, if i stop she stops, and sits at my feet until we move again. We also have leash laws here, but they are more flexible because of the fact that we are not in the city.

Working with your dog for a few hours a days really gives you some great results and strengthens the bond between dog & owner. :) Good luck in your search Cheech!

Chef, thanks for the wonderful offer!! Very nice of you! Those things are adorable! Do you have any pics of them a little larger?

^thanks again. training the dog to be off leash would be really great!

So I showed Rosie the picture of the wheaten terrier, wouldn't you know it, she finds it big!

But I have a secret weapon... Look what i found on youtube...

Coincidentally enough, the song on this video is one of Rosie's favorites... It's also the song we used to walk into the reception hall (remixed version)! So I can use the whole destiny bit to score some points!

Will look and find other images if we have them.

I pulled this one off a google search shows what they look like if left to their natural look. Which is what we do.

OMG, we have one, they're little shedding machines! But sweet little guys.
Well, then they really are like tiny little mastifs!!! I had a English/bull mastif mix OMG...you could of made a whole nother dog outta the hair he left behind!!!! Although he was a WONDERFUL dog!

So I'm not sure if I should be doing this alone, or if I should bring it to a training center, (coincidentally having one across the street from my house)...

Question: I live in a bilingual city, majority of the people speak french. Do you think a dog will get confused being trained in french in school but in english by Rosie and I?
If you are new to this whole "training thing", you may want help..or you could look up different training method and find one you are most comfortable with. I find consistency is the best thing....as long as you are consistent, all should go well. Be sure your wife is part of the training also, that will be important.

As for the language thing, I think you would want to use the same words...you would be part of his/her training, so you could learn the words. Also something that would be very helpful and I highly recommend is along with voice, you should use hand signals...I have always done this, then you don' have to say a word, you just use the hand signal for the command!
