Neglect Proofing a Tank

Perhaps you had Colombian Ramshorns, which are not the common tank snail and not really ramshorns, they are a flat-spiraled Apple snail and do eat plants. Common ramshorns do not eat plants unless they are dead already.

Of course water changes are good, but the point of the post was how to reduce maintenance while he is away. One way would be to balance the tank. If the plants are keeping the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates down and his parents overfeed or fail to do maintenance for 3 weeks, the whole tank won't die. Also in contrast to gravel, using basic soil for a substrate combined with excess fish food provides all the trace elements required. I suspect the soil and plants are also capable of removing hormone and other fish excretions from the water.

But again, the point is, if his parents are going to neglect the tank, having a good soil substrate with lots of aerobic activity from the root system, the neglect would have minimized effect. :)
