The other day I got called away and forgot to turn my ECCO cannister filters back on after doing a big water change.

It was 24hrs before I noticed and I didn't want to poison the tank with dead bacteria, so I disconnected them, dumped the water in them, flushed the media baskets with tank water and rinsed the white filterpads with tap water.

I was very surprised to find about a half dozen little black worms in the filterpads of one of the filters (only one, none at all in the other). They were round, about 1/16" long, writhing in an S pattern, very dark or black, pointy on both ends. Are these Nematodes?

I've been doing some deep gravel vacs and never found any in the gravel.

For the life of me, I can't figure out where they came from. My tank is a month old. Everything is brand new except two plastic plants that had been sitting out of water for over 6 months to a year (They were vigorously rinsed before being put in the tank). No live plants. The fish are the only living thing in there. Could they have come from the food? (no live food)

There are thousands of differnt forms; google and you will be amazed. They are everywhere, on most everything.
