The guy at the LFS has a pair of these breeding. I was reading a bit about them and it seems they like to hang out in panted parts of Lake Tanganyika. I was wondering if anyone knows the water parameters for this fish? What substrate? What plants?

Hard high pH water (pH in the 8s), sand/crushed coral sand substrate, lots of rocks with caves. Very hardy, pretty fish with great colonial behavior. No plants required, but java fern will survive in the high pH.

Thanks I was looking around a bit and saw I could keep some hornwart, azolla and maybe a water Lilly in with these guys. I think some vals would work and I agree about the java fern.

I could raise them in a twenty that I have but I need to think this through for the long run since they would be a departure from some other things I have been thinking about.

I was really struck by how pretty they are.

The plants are required for me.

your going to need a bigger tank for a breeding pair.

Yes that is what I meant by thinking it through. I do have a 50g tank I am not using but I did have other plans for it.

I think these fish are beautiful. I have some my mostly Tanganyikan tank, and 2 of them are now guarding their fry that were born last week. It is really interesting parenting behavior. Even my 10" Pleco is getting harrased by them whenever he/she swims too close to the fry.

I have two ten gallon tanks, a thirty gallon tank, (those are running right now), an empty 20L and an empty 50g. I am growing plants right now in all the tanks that are set up with the idea that in the end I will set up the 50 as a high light plant tank. So my thinking right now is to house the juveniles in the 20 and then move them to the 30. (which is probably a 29 but I think in round numbers.)

I have been to that LFS a few times in the last month. These two fish have now filled a 50 gallon tank with fry and they themselves are still in another 50 producing more. Do I really want to manage something like that? What would I do with them all?

So I am still thinking.
