Neon Tetra has a popeye

I had a betta with popeye I used Maracyn and Maracyn 2 combo and it worked. One thing I suggest though is if you can get a hospital tank and quarantine that fish it would be better for your tank. I had a problem getting the tank water back to normal after treating the fish in its tank. I got an ammonia spike and had problems getting my nitrate level up after the treatment was done. My betta had some other problem too because about a week after treatment he stopped eating and had problems swimming I am not sure if it was swimbladder or the start of dropsy but he ended up dieing :( and I am not sure what the actual cause was all signs of popeye were gone. After a few water changes I got the parameters back to where they should be in his tank. QT might be your best way to go atleast this way you don't risk losing your biological filter load. The betta that died is the one in my avatar.

well... a week and a day later (today) he is still alive and kicking :). I really hope it was just a bite from the discus, coz he is a bit nippy, mainly at the clown loaches who gobble the food up right in front of his mouth, before he can get it. I got bored with my quarantine/ hospital tank so I bred some guppies in it, so I don't wanna medicate them. Other fish are not showing any symptoms... they are really happy

still has popeye yet it has gotten slightly worse. He still acts fine... and this is after 2 weeks... any ideas of what is going on please?

Have you made any change in your tank maintenance schedule? Isolate it and try both Maracyn and Maracyn II.

Well I have lowered my nitrates, through water changes. How shall I isolate him... with a bag floating in the tank? or quarantine (which I don't have :(). I don't really want to bother using maracyn and maracyn II on it as it is a small fish, making it hard to medicate and I could buy about 10 more tetras for the price of the medication...

Is it possible for you to get a 5g tank? If not, why not perform euthanasia on him? The idea of him still alive with a worsening popeye condition is rather horrible to me.

he seems happy though :(

I was considering euthanasia except I was hoping he'd pull through. Whats the best way?

This is a touchy topic however the main point of euthanasia is to make the fish end its misery instantly without suffering from pain and agony. Clove oil and chopping off its head would be the most humane methods considered.

I have an angel that recently went thru popeye

popeye is a catch all it is a Sx of many possible issues..injury leads the list

the other is infection..sometimes it is an injury with a secondary infection.
it is very possible that the Discus nipped at the neon..afterall small neons in a tank with adult discus could become food for the Discus.

the point is keep the water clean..if the fish does not respond to clean water you copuld have a secondary infection..treat with anti biotic(tho pimafix/melafix does seem to have positive effects with popeye) treat for 7-10 days as or as directed.
