Neon tetra, jumpers?

get a cat, it is a big waste to pick up mummyfy fish from the floor and put them in trash can, let the cat take care of jumpers for you.

don't try my above suggestion, or if you 've already have a cat, get rid of it,

don't try my above suggestion..

ok, it is weird, I am out of suggestions. I've never had any neons as jumpers, but they were floaters, especially after feeding, some of them floated on surface bellies up for a couple hours before the air got out of their system.

Are you saying the dog' bed is right beneath the tank?....maybe the dog's spooking the fish when he settles into bed? Just a thought.

I actually just lost another tetra right now. Was fixing my dogs bed which is under my big tank and there it was. A dried up neon tetra. I'm down to 4 O.o I don't get it. The tank is heavily planted with plenty of hiding spots and I feed them such a variety of food ranging from blood worms, mosquito larvae, brine, tetramin, NLS pellets.

I mean I won't really care at this point if I lose the remaining 4 due to jumping but I won't be keeping neon tetras without a hood. I really wonder if it is because they are trying to mate? I'm baffled.

have to agree with andyjh, that's a definate possibility.

LOL my dog is a chihuahua  the guy isn't even 6" tall haha. I'm sorry just the thought of my dog doing anything is funny. He is a small dog it is not possible for him to disturb the tank.

only one of my neons has ever jumped. I couldn't find one of them, and when I opened the hood to my tank I saw one of the neons on TOP of some of the floating water sprite I have in the tank...I was very confused, and wasn't sure if maybe something was wrong with the water. I tested the water, all was fine but I did a water change anyway just in case. Fish do the darndest things sometimes. I personally think having a hood on your tank is a good idea regardless of which fish you have.

I would remove them to a safer location except I only have 4 and no space. My decision might sound cruel but I'll leave it as it is. With 4 neon tetras left I think I'll just let them do what they do. Spooked tetras can not be the case because I am the only one in my room and most of the time I'm staring at my tv playing online. I live with my grandparents so they aren't very active either. I've had this tank running for 8 months now.

IMO lowering the water line wouldn't do anything. The more depth the more speed they can pick up and jump higher. This is a 55g tank and I would need to have the tank half filled to not let them jump out. Its funny, I have a betta sorority adjacent to this tank and my male betta hasn't jumped over. He does flirt with the ladies though.

I wonder why you think doppping water level means emptying half the tank??? Dropping 1" of water could prevent further carpet diving by neons which I thought was your main reason for posting in first place, to save what you can. Worth trying if it means saving even one fish, imo.

You misunderstood. Dropping 1" wouldn't help because the neon's are bottom dwellers. By the time they reach the top they would have reached their top speed. I would have to drop the tank level significantly to compensate for this.

Poor water conditions can make fish that aren't usually jumpers jump. Also, if something is chasing them (you said there is a king betta in the tank?) that makes fish jump.

You need some plants that spread their leaves on the water surface, OR some duckweed, frogbit or riccia flutens, is my suggestion.

I had only one or two Tetra leaping to their death in years.

...don't some Chihuahuas have very long legs, ha, ha?

...how about draping some netting over the tank at night?

I was thinking about my king betta. TBH he doesn't do anything. I can link you to a video of my tank so you can see for yourself. Mostly he just lays in the leaves and sleeps all day. I also don't think it is the king betta because I've had him for a bit over a month. This has been happening for a while now, well before I got him.

W/e the reason it stopped now. I still feel it was due to spawning. Now there are only males left.
