I'm sorry to have two threads on the board right now but I woke up this morning to discover that one neon tetra appears to be missing an eye this morning.
Disease? Attack? Suggestions? I am dismayed and at a loss.
Hmm, It could be any of those. So, let's get the run down:
Water Parameters, tank occupants, size of tank, you know the drill by now
Any other signs of battle damage on him or any other fish? Any odd behaviors or appearances?
Let's see, I don't have time to test the water right now but I'll try to in a few hours. I just did a 25% water change last night and the Seachem ammonia alert has been "good" steadily.
23 gallon tank:
11 Neon Tetras
1 Bushy Nose Pleco
2 African Dwarf Frogs
1 Betta
1 or 2 ghost shrimp (hard to count, there were once 4)
We have been treating with Jungle Labs Fungus Clear (Nitrofurazone, Furazolidone, and potassium dichromate) for 9 days because of fin rot on the betta and then fungus on the betta. It also cleared up some gold/brown spots on the betta and tetra. Now, the betta has a small cottony patch on the middle of his fin, so we went ahead with one more dose of the Fungus Clear when we did the water change last night.
We have never seen the betta bother the tetras unless they were nipping at him (which they did a lot last week). Everything seemed pretty peaceful except the neons seemed to be hassling each other yesterday afternoon. No one seems wounded except for the one-eyed tetra, and his fins, etc. look fine.
Then, we had the strange shower of tiny worms last night when we turned on the filter after the water change... *sigh*
 Apologize for having more than one thread? That's funny! Rack 'em up, put out as many Q's as you'd like! Just try to keep them easy so we (I) can answer them .
Are you certain the tetra had both eyes when you bought them? If you bought 11 all at once, it would be hard to account for all eyes. If the socket is clean and shows no sign of infection, it will be o.k..
Filter worms? You saw them moving? I ask b/c one sign that my hoses need to be cleaned is a shower of white strings after turning the filter back on. They are not worms (in my case), just gunk growing in the lines.
Um, the frogs...are they the clawed kind that will eat fish when they get bigger? Or try to eat them while smaller?
*Oops* sorry, just read the other thread on your worm problem.
As beviking said, It should be ok as long as it's not infected. Obviously, it will have a disability but can live with it. I noticed you appologized for the 2nd post. It is when people post the SAME question more than once, or on multiple forrums that it is a problem. Unless you have some kind of neon tetra eye eating worm, the 2 questions are unrelated, so its ok.
I had one lose an eye a few weeks ago, it looks like it was a fight between neons. He was chased all day and finally I put him down when he started swimming sideways and shaking.
This one-eyed tetra seems to be acting normally. I do suspect another tetra ate his eye. Yesterday, I added Fungus Clear and I've noticed whenever I do that, it seems to irritate the tetras. They seem particularly snippy with each other the first 24 hours or so.
Also, there's usually a couple with red gills the day after adding the tablets. This time, there's only one with red gills, but I'm a little concerned about him since he seems to be opening and closing his mouth constantly -- much more than the other neons. I've thought about isolating the one red gilled neon in another tank with unmedicated water but not sure if that would just stress him out more.
i have a one eyed cory.... when i was bringing him home from the lfs, i noticed his eye looked like one of its pupils was shaped long and thin, not round, but after a little babying, it grew right over (looks the same as his skin) and he does not seem to notice. the funny thing now though, is he still "blinks" where his eye used to be.
