what do you think happened to my neon tetra? I had them for 3 weeks already in my tank, just this morning i noticed that the upper part of one of them was missing. What can I do to make it grow back? I have 14 neons, a swordtail in 30gal tank, just recently I just added a betta in the tank. Could it be that the betta bit a chunk off the tail?? and I don't think it's finrot. Am I overstocked???

Nope you aren't overstocked.

It could have been either the sword or the betta, as I have never seen neon tetras nip eachother.

If you look at the sword and/or the betta, how do they react with the tetras?

Any chasing?

It could be the betta (as betta's temperament can vary upon the individual).

You should put the betta in a bowl for a certain period of time and you'll see how the neons react.
I'm 70% sure!

The sword is pretty timid... the betta was a bit aggresive at times though. but the neons always outswim the betta. My aquarium does have some hiding places for the neons. Also the newly added betta doesnt seem to be eating much. I tried tetramin, dried bloodworms, frozen bloodworms. any other food suggestions??

I might end up returning the betta to the lfs if there are more missing fins. Will the neon's fin regenerate?? Hate to see the little guy go.. he just isnt swimming right.

The neons will recover but it will take some time.
Did the "accident" afecte how they swim???

i think you should do something to seperate the neons and the betta.

The neon has been swimming well now. I think he has adapted and able to catch up with the school. I'll give another few days for observation before separating the betta. thanks everyone
