I would like to get neons for my tank and was wondering how important it is for them to have acidic ph. My ph is 7.5.

neon tetra lives in the same environment as discus so I would assume the acidic ph is important for them to thrive and breed also clean water is important for them IMO when I kept discus and tetras 6 years back.

reading from http://www.fishpondinfo.com/neon.htm
Common names: Neon tetra, neon
Scientific/Latin names: Paracheirodon innesi, formerly Hyphessobrycon innesi
Maximum length: 1.5 inches
Colors: Silver, white, red, and blue (orange and green for other varieties)
Temperature preference: 73 to 79 degrees F, can withstand 68 to 85 degrees F
pH preference: 5 to 7
Hardness preference: Soft
Salinity preference: 1 Tablespoon per 2 to 10 gallons (less when not breeding)
Compatibility: Good
Life span: Up to10 years
Ease of keeping: Easy
Ease of breeding: Moderate if eggs separated from fish

Neons. as with most other commonly kept fish, really do not and cannot read pH and are quite adaptable to water conditions other than for breeding.

The info given specifying the addition of salt to a neon tank is horrible. Blackwater fish are not just from soft water (=low GH, which their eggs require but the fish do not), they are from low TDS water. Adding salt boosts the TDS markedly. It is a contradiction in terms to specify soft water and then add salt. That to me is a dead give-away that the original author of that script did not understand water or fish physiology at all.

My pH is 7.8 and my neons are doing well. I realize I will not be able to breed them unless I change some things for them but that's okay with me for now, they are just fun to watch :)
