grand rapids MI,
I have had school of 6 neon's in my 10 gal tank for about 2 weeks they are active and school just fine the other day 1 of them went solo not all the time just some of the time. now they are chasing each other around the tank some times they circle each other and go from the top to bottom than break away. at times they swim next to each other almost touching.they don't seem to be hurting each other. is this normal  the tank also has about 20 or so cherry shrimp who are healthy and reproducing but the tetras don't even acknowledge their existence

I have a huge female that chases everyone around. Sometimes I feel like taking her and putting her on time out.

My neons do that too. I think it's pretty normal.

Isn't it funny that when our fish are "bad" we want to put them in "time-out". I am just laughing so much, because I wanted to do that with Chinese Joe when I first got him. He chased my Fred around until Fred finally tagged him and then he stopped. The next week Fred was lounging on-top of Joe.

I actually had an employee at a fish store suggest time out -- and it worked!

Look very closely to see if they are breeding- tetras are egg scatterers and they do a little dance and chase like that when they are breeding. You might see some eggs. My red serpae were doing it a while back and the behavior sounds similar. You won't have any fry unless you set up a special tank for them to breed in. Usually the other fish eat the eggs. I have also had black skirt tetras breed and the behavior is very similar.

Hrm, I have a similar situation with some red eye tetra i have had for a month or so. Have 6 of them (14 gal tank). The four larger ones float around and do their thing but the other two smaller ones tend to stay near the bottom and out of site unless it's feeding time. They don't seem to bother each other and during / after feeding they will school for a few minutes but then the two little ones head back to their spots (always the same spots). Perhaps they are spawning? Will have to check when I get home.
