Hey all,

So here's a peculiar question. One by one, my neon tetras are completely disappearing! You'd think they were just dissolving in water, they are so completely gone. I have a 10g tank with one dwarf gourami, one swordtail (we had two but the other one died early on, I think he was sick when we got him) and formerly 5 neon tetras. Gradually, one by one, the tetras have disappeared. We can't find their bodies in the filter, under or inside any of our rocks (we have 3 different plastic ones), or around the tank area (which is completely covered) and I have a hard time believing they are being consumed completely overnight by the rest of the dwindling population. (And no, in case you're wondering, we don't have any cats who might be eating them.)

I'd like to get more fish to re-stock my tank, particuarly because I know tetras are especially happy in groups - but I don't want to get more without figuring out how we're losing them!

Thanks!!!

My bet is the Gourami is eating them. At one time I had one of my Dwarf Gouramis eat all my mollie babies.

I am new to this hobby but I am pretty sure a dwarf Gourami or a swordtail are not capable of eating a whole neon in one night.

Someone is playing a trick on you I think.

let us know what you find out

sounds to me like they are dieing and decomposing before you find them probably hidden in the decor - they're so teeny it would not take long :)

how was the tank cycled and what are the readings from a good liquid drop test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate ?

that or maybe they got sucked into the water change bucket ?

Where your mollie babies smaller than a neon tetra?

Maybe I should go count mine, I bought a dwarf Gourami last night.

I have never had much sucess raising neons. My guess is they are dead and have decomposed. They could be in your decor.

I have had better luck with other tetras, but not the neons.

ive had neons for awhile and I am certain that they do not regularly dissolve...however, they can be difficult to keep if you params arent perfect or they arent well adapted. my guess is they are dying of stress related issues and being partly or totally consumed. the resulting corpse wouldnt look much like neon corpse, and may be difficult to locate.

Yes they were a bit smaller but the gourami was relentless in the chase of getting them and spitting them out and grabbing them again till finally he did not spit them out anymore.

i agree with the rest, it might have died and the other things ate them like other fishes and snails.
