I have a 10 gallon tank and all that was in it was the 6 neon tetras. I made sure to provide a heater (specifically for tetras) and a filter. They have many places to hide and aquatic plants and fake colorful plants. I don't know why they wouldn't be happy. But 2 of them disappeared and I can't find them.

Neons do best in cooler water in the high 60 low 70F range, so you may not even need a heater. As far as tiny fish totally vanishing, I've had that happen as well. They can get startled and jump out, get eaten by others or get cleverly disguised in the tank decor, substrate, etc..

Sorry to hear about your fish. Neons can lose their colors completely when they die, I think. Maybe they're hard to spot? Or perhaps they're getting sucked in by the filter?

High 60 is too low of a temperature for neon. The original neon tetras were collected from Amazon. Needless to say, the temperature in the rain forest is not high 60, more like high 70 at least. Ideal average temperature is about 78 degree F. They are tropical fish not cold water fish.

^^ Yes. Mistype on my part. Low to mid 70s is best for them given conversations I've had with folks that are big on neon tetras. They can live 8+ years in that temp range.

I currently have 9 Neons in a 20g with some young Neolamps.
The tank is pretty well planted and has a big outcrop of christmas moss. I slowly drip acclimated them to my tank water and they have been tough as a rock ever since.

Mine seem to really enjoy high oxygen content though, I have the air pump on a timer and when it comes on they get a lot more active.

As for Temperature, I have mine right in the middle of the "Green zone" on the thermometer, not too hot not too cold.

It is pretty common that when a fish dies the others will scavange it. The bones on the neons are so tiny it is likely that when they died the other fish picked at what was there and the bones became invisible in the gravel.

Have you had any other losses since your first post? I see it has been a little while.
