Neon Tetras - Good beginner fish? I think NOT!

My experience? They are sickly fish, but I've seen amazing abilities to cling to life. (Or recover.)

I love them and hate them. :/

My thoughts exactly.

Lost another one to NTD so now I have 4 out of 20.

I haven't bought any yet, trying to do my homework first.
If I recall, the tank bred ones are slightly more expensive than the wild caught ones (go figure).
In the forums, some people say that the original hardiness of neons is there in the wild caught ones. Other people say that good breeders have hardy strains and that good tank bred ones live longer.

BTW, I'm sorry about your neons.:(

Thanks... it's more frustrating than anything else. I provide for them the best I can and they get sick and die or just die anyway. All my other fish are fine and some are breeding like... fish.

I've lost a few myself and last night I just witnessed my powder blue gourami exhibiting an exra agressiveness towards the small fishes. I think he's developed a taste of tetras OUCH!

Bummer, I didn't know they like tetras!! I was going to out a pair in my 10gal. Hmm, good thing I didn't buy some gouramis yet!

I don't really think they're that agressive but this one just suddenly turned on all the other fishes. Before it was getting bullied by a dwarf fire red of about the same size then last night, he was standing his ground and doing some of the bullying himself. I did see 'em successfully take down one of the neons (and shared the feast!).

I don't mean to laugh but it seems your Gourami is a "stress-eater" like us humans =)

To "Fish...TheySwim" - Wondering how you've been and if you've had any luck with your neons lately?

Out of the different ones I've had, I've had

Black neon tetras- 4/5 lived
Head and Tail light tetras- 4/6 lived
Silver tip tetras- 2/5 lived
Cardinals- 4/10

I have to say he Black Neons and the Head and Tail Lights were larger while the Silver Tips and Cardinals were a lot smaller so that may have something to do with it.

My LFS is pretty decent and when I went in to purchase the cardinals I asked them how many I would need to buy to ultimately have 6 left in my tank :D. I did research them beforehand and basically from what I've read is that they're hardier than the neon tetras but they don't travel/ship well. It's also recommended to go with the larger ones when purchasing.

Anyway, my LFS recommended 10 so I bought 10. I was wary because they were extremely small but I still have 4 left. So buy large!

On a side note, of the 12 that died listed above I never found a trace of one- EVER. Don't freshwater fish usually float when they're dead?
