Looking at my tank, and my previous posts, I know what happened. I had a temperature crash (got down to about 69 F) that killed two tetras and left the third sick. I could tell that the last tetra wouldn't make it so I didn't think to start a treatment or even identify what it was. I exchanged the fish with Petco's 15 day exchange policy, and lo and behold the new fish got sick (makes sense now that I understand Ich and how it progresses). That's when I made this post.
I went with the medication because it is all natural and I read no warnings about using it with tetras. I have been using 150% dosage and all of the fish are looking great. I still do not really understand the salt treatment. I'm not arguing its effectiveness, I just felt more comfortable using a treatment that I understood. Plus I needed to do something right away, so I didn't have time to do more research about it. Maybe in the future I'll try that one.
The real lesson that I learned is to identify and treat any infection or abnormality with my fish. Even if it won't save the infected fish, it might prevent a recurring problem.
