you can feed your neons all sorts of fish foods, providing it is small enough to fit in their little mouths. I will pinch the flakes a couple of times in my finger to get them to more manageable sizes, they don't seem to have a very hard time sucking in flakes though, and they are easy for them to nibble on. It's amazing how big of a flake they can inhale when they think another fish is going to come and take it from them!

Mine also love hikari micro pellets. Now that they've gotten a little bigger I've been feeding them frozen blood worms and daphnia on occasion. It's hard to say exactly how much you should feed them. I just keep putting a little bit out and watch them as they eat it. You can start to tell when they are getting full as they will lose interest in the food, it shouldn't take more than a minute or two. After a while you'll sort of figure out how much they can eat. I feed mine twice a day and will fast them on occasion.

If you feed them less and less often, you will have far less tank maintanence problems (less pollution from uneaten food & poop) which will lead to less stress on the fish (which means less disease). One of the hardest things to learn about fishkeeping for me was that fish need far less food than we tend to think. I feed my fish (I also keep neons, see enter my tank below) only once every two days, and only what they can eat in about three minutes, yet they are not starved at all. Actually, I got all my fish as juveniles and they have all grown quite well on this regimen.

argh one of my tetras died on the same day I put in some food for the tetras and one ate it all then he mingled at the top and i left for about 10min and came back and he was dead i got him from petco and i have a 15 day waranty though any thoughts why this happened... amonia lvls were low to 0.0 and my water temp was 80 im going to take out water to bring to test at petco tommorow too

thanks for the info matak, I'll look into this a little more and decide on a proper course of action. Currently I feed in such a way that there is usually no uneaten food in the tank, so I just have to deal with what comes out the other end. I've just recently caught on to the idea of fasting my fish and I wonder if feeding them less often will make them more active.

Phoenix, if you decide to change the feedings, you should do it gradually. Maybe add four hours extra between successive feedings while tapering off the amount fed.

pseif1, you mentioned that your ammonia is 0. Is your tank cycled? BTW, Petco doesn't have a good reputation amongst fishkeepers and other pet owners.
