How would those blue neon tubes for cars work as a moon light compared to cold cathodes. Are they similar. Has anyone tried these.

Yes, they work well. I have 2 of them I got from an auto store. They are 12v, so I power them with an old computer power supply which is set on a timer that kicks them on for a few hours every night. They have different sizes and colors too and are relatively cheap.

do you think 2 12" tubes would light up a 55 gal okay?

Absolutely. Two twelves will be a little bit brighter than two tens, but they look excellent. I have a 12" on one side and a 10" on the other on my 55 gal, and you can see how it gets dimmer from one end of the tank to the other, but I am going to replace the 10" with another 12".

I the light spectrum they put out similiar to cold cathode. They won't stress the fish out will they?

why user neon? they are so much more the CCT's

Ive never seen an issue with stress. Hook a set up, you will be glad you did.
