Hi guys
I am about to pick up a neons for my tank today.
Is there anything in particular i need to know about them ?

They are schooling fish, at least 3 should be kept, but more like 6 or more would be ideal. They can be kind of sensitive fish, good water quality is especially important, at least from what I have read.

Less than 6 neons will hide a lot in the back of the aquarium and act weird. Neons like slightly acidic and soft water. Good water quality is a must. The thing about neons is that they often get neon tetra disease, its really a plague right now and there is no cure. I have never had much luck with neons, I don't know why and I know a lot of people who get disillusioned with them. The much prefered alternative are the cardinal tetras. They look like neons but have more red and blue coloring and are bigger. Cardinal tetras are one of the most colorful fish u will find in freshwater. They are more expensive than neons (not by much) and are usually wild caught. Because they are wild-caught, they need more acidic water than neons, like 6.5. I find that after the initial adaption phase, cadinals do great with with even 7.0 PH. Also, I have noticed that my cardinals seek "friends" unlike what I have seen with neons. My cardinals school with my rummy-nose tetras and use them as big brothers to protect them.

Neons are very cool fish to watch in large groups.

We sell a ton of them at the store so what we did is make up a 100 gallon tank with just neons. Decorated it with driftwood and live plants.

Now at any one time we have anywhere from 800 to 2000 neons in the tank. Very cool to watch. We have people come in daily just to look at the tank.

Now I wouldn't recommend putting that many or overstocking like that in anyway. We can do it because it is on a 1000 gallon filtered system and we sell them so fast that it makes it easier for us to maintain. Add the fact that the tank gets a 50% water change twice a week.

But if you put a fair sized group relative to your tank size it really is quite impressive.

I have 4 in a tank with 6 white clouds and they actually school together most of the time. So you may not need a very large group of neons if you have simular small fish. And neon tetra desease is just plain nasty. I had it and it slowly spread one at a time to all of 6 neons at the time. One survived the out break, but even with putting the fish to sleep at the first signs it was still spreading. Not a nice desease to get to say the least.

Guys... thank you soooo much for the timely advice.
Hadn't your replies been fast, I would have ended up spending my money (neons are relatively very expensive out here) and also would have had to endure the pain of seeing them suffer/die - because, from all your responses it appears to me that Neons wouldn't thrieve in my tank conditions.

Thank you all once again.
