Fascinating thread. Donya seems like quite the knowledgeable invert keeper, but the thread is 2 years old, has there been any progress in captive nerite breeding? I can't imagine how someone could go about setting up a tank that could change from salt to fresh twice a day. It'd be a marvel to see.

I contacted a university in florida... can't remember which one, off the top of my head now, a while back. I looked for one that had big biology and oceanic program. I asked them about breeding nerite snails. They basically told me, that unless I had a lot of time and money that it would be impossible to do..... I only asked about olive nerites though... not any of the other ones. I was interested in doing it because I know they are all taken from the wild and I was thinking in terms of preservation for the future. I still think it could be done if you had the right setup and the time to mess with it, but I unfortunately don't. I honestly think that you would have to somehow setup a tank that could change salinity's and react like tides in the ocean to mimic their natural environment. From what I've gathered...... They lay eggs in fresh or slightly brackish, then the eggs or the larvae get washed out to sea with the tides and slowly make their way back to fresh water.
The pictured Nerite, I'm assuming probably needs brackish or salt as part of larval development.
Olive Nerites are a lot more confusing. The best theory I've heard is that whether or not they need saltwater as part of reproduction depends on where they're collected. It would explain why some people are able to breed them in freshwater while others have been unable to. It would also explain why there are sustaining populations of Olive Nerites in some landlocked areas.
