how about a false canopy ? sides with no top ... I suppose if you were a foot ball fan you could make up rights on either side as well, and if the fish does clear the wall its 3 points

That may be the best idea in terms of not hindering light output, besides glass tops and heat resistant acrylic shields. It just depends upon how high you are willing to make the sides . Just be prepared for the netting material to make a relatively large decrease in the incident light.

Thanks everyone!!! i ended up just making an aluminum screen frame and putting some 3/4 inch mesh nylon netting. cant really notice a lot of light reduction, so it seems okay, but it's not the prettiest thing. hard to do a canopy, just bought the light i have and it's a fixture...i guess i could tear it apart and mount it in the canopy...that would make the wife sooo happy!!! Can't they just understand??
