10 gal question

I've been asked a question about a ten gallon setup. My wife wants me to setup a 10 gallon tank over our breakfast bar. I realize I'm going to have to fortify the overhead structure to maintain the weight of a fully watered 10 gallong tank, that's no problem.

My question is this. Is there a readily available filtering system that I could submerge into the tank? It's going to be visible from all sides so having a filter system hanging off one side or end won't work.

Perhaps an undergravel system? Also, can I mix flourite or another substrate AND gravel? OR should I use one or the other?

Thanks for all suggestions and tips.

Woody

You probably want to look at a internal sponge filter. The only problem is it will be kinda hard to hide on all sides with plants. Also very rarely but the sponge might need cleaned. One other thing they can't handle a real heavy bioload so you will still need to do water changes in the tank.

Check out.

Thanks for the link. I've seen the Fluval filters before, lot of good writeups about that. Maybe that's what I'm looking for.

my $0.02, and a lot of you will agree and a lot will disagree, is stay away from the undergravel filter unless you want to use a reverse flow undergravel. unless you are very diligent about cleaning the gravel all the time and cleaning under the filter plate(read: PITA), it will collect debris and turn into a nitrate factory, polluting your water. rfug=ok, regular ug= bad, IMHO

I have a fully submersible Duetto 100 power filter rated at 90 gallons per hour.

I've had it for half a year and am pleased with it.

I'm not sure if they make a tank larger than 7 gallons, but Eclipse tanks (I think) have all the equipment hidden in the hood; you could view the tank from all sides and not see any equipment. Just an idea.

MarineLand does make a 12 gallon Eclipse 12 tank, plus they have the Eclipse system 1,2, and 3 standalone hood unit that fits over tanks 10-30 gallons. They're rather pricey, the eclipse 12 retails for $100, but its worth looking at if convenience and appearance is more important than price.

I would never recommend an under gravel filter (UGF)..
