I have a 108g aquarium that i'm going to setup in the next few days. I've tried to do a little studying to figure out what I would like to add, without overstocking it and keeping it as comfortable and safe for my new little friends. So here is the low down:

1- Pink Veil Tail Oscar ( will get 12" in time)
2- FireMouth Meekis (pair)
1-Texas Chichlid (12"+)
1-Silver Dollar (will get 12"+)

I think I've overstocked with this group. Tell me what you think. Im not a professional, nor pretend to be, just love fish and just recently gotten back into the swing of things.

i think with all the colors it should be a very vibrant tank and pleasing to the eyes. A few people said the silver dollars should be in groups of 4 or more, but honestly after much research I feel just one male alone will be perfectly fine, there will be plenty of space for all 3 large fish to move around easily. Im going to use a few DIY ideas such as some alarger hiding spots, and a rock formation for a background for the fish.

How long do you think itll take to cycle this aquarium? Since its 108g and 6 feet long I'm going to use multiple filters, so the filtration will be spread out over the tank. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Also what could I do for a hood/lighting system? I pondered buying a few slates of plexiglass and drilling quarter size holes in it, so air can still access the water, but my fish cant jump out.Any ideas?

Filtering - I like the Aquaclear 110s for mechanical filtering; I would think that you'd need three of these for your tank if you went that way. You could also substitute a cannister for one of them. Lots of people like the cannisters because they're quiet, but they don't have the flow volume of the Aquaclears. I have one of each in my 75g; I can keep the Aquaclear clean mechanically by rinsing the filter every week, and since the cannister doesn't get cleaned as often, it maintains my biological filtering even if I end up killing off the bacteria in the Aquaclear.

Just out of curiousity, what source did you find that said silver dollars would get up to 12"? I have a school for my 150, and based on my research they should only get 4-6". If I'm wrong, I'm going to have to seriously rethink that idea.

They can reach up to 12". I looked at a tank held one 2 weeks ago that was rediculously huge. Thats why im settling for one of them and not a entire school of them. I have another question, I have a entire school of Black Tetras. They can live in same type water conditions as my other fish is it possible these can be introduced into the new aquarium with the other fish as long as theres plenty of coverage and hiding spots? The tetras have grown up with the oscar and the others and no deaths yet and its been a few months. What do ya guys think?

ill just keep these in the 30 gallon which is my breeding tank and possibly give them to some kids that would like to have some fish.

ok big question:

Sand or gravel for my babies?
