New 13G Nano Received! Need help starting step by step....

I don't think the level in the skimmer should be changing that much. Is something getting stuck in the intake? What brand is it?

You will probably slowly discover a few things on the rock. It really depends on the source. TBS rock is absolutely covered. The stuff at my LFS looks like, well, rock.

Butting in with a quick question

Hi. Following this thread with great interest. A small reef tank is going to be my winter project. I really like Val's tank! What is a tank with that sump section really called? I'd love to google and track one down. Thanks!!!

There are a few brands (I think only acrylic tanks) that have the false backs. "Nano Cube"s, and a few others...

Below is who I bought mine from. There is an 18, 25, & 35 gallon. I have the 18. This pic is the 25g. It doesn't include lights, stand, or skimmer. You can buy directly. Don't have to bid on e-bay. Under this auction, you can click on "View Seller's Other Auctions" to see his other stuff.

Skimmer came with tank and there isn't a brand. It's a venturi skimmer. I think the change may have to do with water evaporation. It seems I need to add about 1 1/2 quarts a day of top off water and then the water level in the back changes which makes the foam go higher or lower. Nothing seems to be stuck..

Waited 2 days to test water again, but ammonia is still at .50 and nitrite is 0. I wish it would change. Test kits about a year old, but there's no expiration date on the box or bottles...

The water has less bubbles now and is quite clear! Looks really good. Still no visible life on the LR, but we'll see. After the cycle I'll get some TBS rock and hopefully that will spread?

By the way, I got engaged last night! : ) (Just had to throw that in there!) He said he was tempted to put the ring in the tank, but was petrified to ruin the water or something! I would have been more worried about ruining the ring! lol Thanks and have a great weekend!

OK. Sounds like a reasonable water loss.

You might test some freshly mixed SW. The ammonia came up so fast, I am wondering whether it's a false positive.

Coralline will definitely spread, as will some of the sponges and macroalgae.

Congratulations! That's almost as exciting as a new tank :D Best wishes for a fun and happy marriage. [and a relatively painless runup to the ceremony]

hello all im also keeping tabs on the progress of your tank also which is coming along nicely im at present cycling my tank which is about in its 4th week im doing a fishless cycle but at present the nitrites seem to be lasting a long time is this normal?and also congrats on your engagement...

Actually gold is one of the few metals that wont poison the water, assuming it was a gold ring, since it takes a VERY, VERY powerful acid before gold will start to corrode. However anything below 24kt isnt pure gold, but usually a mixture diffrent metals (for the record 14kt gold has between 26.75-31.24% copper content, hence dont put it into an aquarium)

(It's actually platinum!)

ANYWAY--- I tested saltwater I had made already that isn't in the tank, and you are right! It came as .50 so I guess I need a new test kit.

If, then, the ammonia in the tank is 0 and the nitrate 0 I would assume I need to add some type of bacteria??? Should the LR have done that already? It has been 6 days...

I have a bag of frozen cooked shrimp in the freezer. Can I throw one or two of those in?

What do you think about those bacteria products like "Cycle"??? I hope they are okay b/c I added in 4 capfuls 2 days ago, but nothing has changed...
