Hi, just wanted some input about my new Cichlid tank. Here is what I have:

29 Gallon Tank
Flourescent Hood
Sand Substrate
Texas holy rock
fake plants
2 Penguin BioWheel 100's
1 Marineland Powerhead W/ Sponge Filter

I have 10 Chichlids and 3 Giant Danios for "chaser" fish, everyone gets along fine.

Are there any changes I should make to filtration? It is a pretty high bioload, but the tank is established and things seem fine. Would it be better to upgrade to Aquaclear? Or another type of filter? The penguins work fine but they are loud and expensive to maintain. I like having the powerhead and prefilter just to suck out the big stuff, which makes vacuming easier. Basically my question is what would be the best FILTER configuration for this tank? And what media should i put in the filter? Should I keep my powerhead? Any input on anything would be appreciated. The water is claer, but leaves a lot to be desired. Figured I needed to figure out what kind of filter to use. Any other general suggestions?

That is a heavy bio-load. What kinds of cihlids you have in their beacuse i'm pretty sure you will have problems down the road.

What type of cichlids? This needs to be known because any cichlid other than the dwarf varities WILL be too large for that tank, and with so many of them the aggression is going to do them in. You'll end up with 1 or 2 fish in the end, the rest beaten to death.

Of course, this all depends on what types.

As for filtration, what you have now seems fine. Cichlids are messy so the more water-flow the better. Keep the powerhead.

I wouldnt be worried so much about filtration, because no matter how much filtration you have it wont help the fact that they are gonna be killing each other for territories. Overstocking only works on tanks over 75 gallons.
