The CO2 is going like gangbusters this morning, so I added some liquid ferts. I ordered dry ferts from Rex, about three weeks ago, but I haven't received them yet.
The plants are all looking good except the Vals which seem to be melting a bit. There is some green algae starting to grow on the driftwood as well. Ammonia is all gone in the tank, but I still have a lot of nitrites and nitrates left so I haven't quite finished the cycle either. I don't know the high levels are having a negative effect on the vals, or if the melt is natural.
I'm anxious to move the Rams to their new home, but I'm in a holding pattern until the nitrites clear up.
The tank is getting out of control now. I woke up this AM to a 'skin' on the water, the green water is worse and there is algae everywhere...
I picked up a Fluval surface skimmer to hook up to my Rena to try and keep sludge from forming. I'll do a 50% water change tonight to remove excess nitrate and I hope the nitrite spike is over. I'll get 4 Otos in there the second the nitrite is gone and hope that improves things.
I'm also cutting the photoperiod back to 5hrs or so to combat the algae. Ugh.
well, at least it sounds like you got a good game plan... Hope it all works out for you...
and on a side related question: Im not sure if this is true or not... [me being extreamly noob to planted aquariums] but, I heard that the "skin" build up on the top of the water is from protiens that the plants and excess nutriets produce... is this true?
Either way.. I hope that hooking up a surface skimmer helps out with that... let me know because I am experiencing light "skin" as well.... ;] [thanks]
I'm sure it's organics from the massive algae bloom. The excess Nitrates are fueling it no doubt.
My dry ferts are here, so the plan for the night is a big water change, dosing potassium and phosphorus to try and get the macros in balance and getting my 4dkh solution made so I can get the drop checker in and try to balance this thing.
Nitrites are still off the charts. Grr...
Got the skimmer in and it doesn't quite fit easily on the Rena intake, but I got it jammed on. Hopefully it's not going to slip off a bunch of times. It did clear up the surface skin right away though. I just need to see if the floating watersprite causes any issues though.
So the tank finished cycling last night, and I did a 50% water change in anticipation of adding fish tonight.
So, lo and behold what do I notice after the water change?
This:
Looks like one of the front seams is failing. :mad2:
I've purchased another 29g tank, and taken the afternoon off to paint the new tank, drain the old one, and move everything over. I still think I'll add fish tonight.
On the plus side, I won't take the short-cut I did last time, and I will give the plants a bleach bath. I've got quite a few hitch hiking snails and this will give me a chance to remove them from the tank.
You dip it in a 1 part bleach/20 parts water bath for 2-3 minutes then move it to a bucket with loads of dechlorinater in it. Then rinse with tap water and replant. Kills algae and snails.
It does have the possibility of killing the plant as well, but I'll be as careful as possible.
