Your centerpiece can be a firemouth cichlid, angelfish, gourami, ram, etc. Just make sure it won't eat your school. Corys are fun bottom dwellers, but you could also do Kuhli loaches. A warning on plecos; they poop A LOT. Understock the bottom dwellers if you get a pleco.

If you want color, do an african cichlid tank. They come in lots of bright colors, and you can have a lot of them in a 40. they behave better when crowded, unlike most fish.

Haha! I thought someone might say that...I've just discovered cichlids (i feel weird going into the freshwater section after buying so much saltwater stuff!) So I'm thinking of going that route now...
