Good morning.

Well I have my 40gal tank emptied and drying, I'll start laying sand and getting prep work done tomorrow (Saturday). Here is where the new SW adventure will begin.

And never fear, the former residents of the 40gal community were safely moved to their new home, a 29g hex that I put in the family room.

I'm going to try and make this a pic documentary as I go along, so if anyone sees or reads anything that might be a mistake, you can point it out to me. I'm really getting excited about this. I've been reading this and a couple other sites for days now, soaking up info and going through some magazines and books for research as well.

If my loving wife will indulge me tomorrow, I'll have her snap some pictures while I'm going through the sand and accessories process.

Just a hint: cover the sand with a clean plastic bag or a towel as you pour the water in, or place a large bowl or plate in the bottom on the sand and pour water onto that. This helps prevent the sand from creating a milkshake effect.

Thanks OG, I do the plate thing with my gravel in the FW tanks, so I was thinking I'd use it to pour the water in the SW as well.

A couple of questions:

1. I've read RO water...is that referring to water mixed with the salt?

2. Do I put in water, THEN add salt to it in the tank? Or is it best to mix the salt/water BEFORE putting it into the tank?

I'm a little confused about that part.

RO is super-purified water. you have to buy a special unit, put your tap water in and it comes out free of almost anything besides H2O. then you add the salt. I think it's supposed to be better to mix it in a different container and then pour it in.

woo-hoo, i answered a question instead of asking it for once :dance

If I'm not mistaken, it needs to aerate for 24 hrs. I have never made my own saltwater though so I could be mistaken.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, a filter unit you put on your waterline going TO the tap, and that takes out some of the hardness and bad chem's in tap?

RO= Reverse Osmosis. Most of the water machines you see in the grocery store are RO machines. You can also buy your own at Home Depot, or any home supply store. You can use tap water, just test it first to see if it has anything bad in it.

Might look into a filtration unit at Lowes. The Mrs. has been talking about putting one in anyway, so that would be another good reason to have one installed.

Tank Update 1/22/05

Ok here it is, another update to the adventure.

Got the tank back painted a nice deep shade of blue, and laid the sand in.
I'm thinking tomorrow after church I'll pour the water in and start getting it heated up. LR should be ready late in the week or next weekend.
