I am just starting out with a 50 gallon tank that i got from a friend, and I have a few questions since i have never done this before.

1) What is the best filtration system? I was think about getting the kind you put on the side, and the under gravel system. Is this over kill?

2) What is the best combination of fish? I am getting freshwater fish. I would like to get about 5 different kinds of fish. I would like to get smaller schooling fish that are tropical, so what do you people think would be the best combination?

Any info will help. I am new to this and would like to get any help that I can get. Thanks

Hey Joey
1) From what I've read and heard on this site an Undergravel filter is the way to go.
2) In my opinion, you should just start looking at fish then deciding what u like there are alot of good sites with pics and info (including this one).

this is a good site (hope this is ak to post a website)

But if i had a larger tank i would look into Blue Rams and Gourami's of some sort. Not sure if they are compatable but i think they are both Communnity fish.

You have lots of options fish wise for that size tank...My advice is to go to the store you plan to buy your fish from, write down what you like and come home and do some research to see if they will go well together and to make sure they won't get too big for your tank. I would not rely on the store to give you accurate info.!! Some of them don't know anything about fish  !! I had about 3 different schools of tetras in a 50g tank and they rarely hung out together. Of the fish I have now, my scissortails school the best.

lol...I was just at walmart....they listed the red bellied pacu as only getting up to 10 inches !!

Definitely do your reasearch first !! Lots of info online if you google the type of fish you think you'd like to put in that tank.
