new 55 gal tank

Hey everyone

Just bought a 55 gallon tank with stand and have it set-up with currently no fish until I finish the cycling process - it is for a freshwater aquarium

My question is, this morning I tested the water and am getting a very high ammonia rating at .40 - I am going to get another testing kit to get a nitrite reading...but I know cycling involves adding ammonia and such, am I still to continue if my reading is this high currently?

that depends if your reading is ppm or mg/L or how ever your test kit reads it. You may have to do some math and conversion like i do to fit the peramaters of the link above to insure its at the right ppm reading

Here is a good test kit to get.Has all the improtant tests you need for cycling a tank.And yes,keep adding ammonia until the cycle has completed and you have added your fish.
