Hello! I recently have come into possession of a 55 gallon long aquarium. I currently have a 20 gallon setup that I plan to transfer my fish from when the new tank is cycled and ready.

I currently have:
3 x Harlequin Rasbora's
2 x Scissortail Rasbora's
3 x Black Skirt Tetra's
1 x Rosy Tetra
1 x Silver Hatchetfish
1 x Butterfly Hillstream Loach

I was hoping to add some Hatchetfish and Rasbora's to get a few school's going as well as a school of cory's, but was also interested in adding a single Angelfish and a pair of Blue rams or Keyhole cichlids, or 1 male and 2 female double red apisto's.

My question was will the cichlid choices be ok with my other community fish, and of course I am worried about overstocking my tank. This is my first large tank and am excited to put it together with some more unique fish I have never kept before.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very appreciated! Thanks!

If you plan on keeping your 20 set up,I would split up your schools between the 2 tanks, and add enough fish to all the ones you have to make schools of at least 6.
Or you could move all of the fish you have to your 55,up the schools to 6,and then that tank would be stocked.
If you want to add cichlids,(which I would),have 3 schools of 6,1 angel, and then your choice of the pairs you mentioned. That will stock your 55.And with 2 schools of 6 in your 20,you could have a single keyhole in there. You could have the loach in either tank.

I would put the hillstream in a proper cold water, high flow tank with several others..not in a tropical community.

Really? I have had him/her for quite some time now, looks and acts very healthy. Something I will have to look into though, thanks :)

I would bump up all of the fish to schools of 6. I would do the following with the 55 gal:

- 8 Harlequin rasboras
- 6 Scissortail rasboras
- 5 Silver hatchetfish
- One mated pair of dwarf cichlids (i.e. Bolivian rams, cockatoo dwarf cichlids, Aggasiz's dwarf cichlid, dwarf flag cichlid, etc.)

Then bump up the schools of the black widow tetras and rosy tetras and leave them in the 20 gal.
