I'm getting a 55 gallon tank in a couple days and i want to make it my first saltwater tank. I'm not sure what equipment comes with it so what all do i need to make sure i get? do i need a protein skimmer? how much filtration do i need? would some clownfish, damsels and chromis do good in it? what are good hardy beginner fish that are cheap like under $15 preferrably under $10?

First find out what comes with the tank is it a kit? Then I would post what it had some of the stuff out there ain't worth a plugged nickel. As to what you need to get it's going to depend on what sort of set up you want. I would get live rock for filtration between 1.5 and 2 lbs be gallon depending on the density of the rock . As to your fish list I would get the clowns and leave the damnsels at the shop they will be a real pain and you won't like them for long trust me. As to hardy fish there are pleanty but, it's going to depend on what sort of set up your working for. I don't want my advise to cause you more trouble down the road. To sum it up if you tell us more we'll tell you more :)

Check out the "stickys" at the beginning of this forum. They are loaded with useful information that has helped me make many decisions with my first marine tank. Think long about what you want it to be in the end. I've found that it is not a cheap hobby by any means, and buying what you really need and buying quality will save you money and frustration later. By the way, I've just started with the marine stuff myself and am already hooked, so be careful of the addictive aspect of the hobby! Have fun with it and spare no expense. :)

Congrats on your new tank.

Alright heres what i got an All-glass aquarium hood, standard 48 inch lights, 2 penguin 180s and a couple different heaters. how much more filtration would i need? what filters would be best for not much more than 50 dollars? will i need a protein skimmer? What kind of sand should i use? how much live rock should i use? can i use something like lace rock for a base?
