i would suggest not doing anything but keep testing your water. I set up my 55 about a year ago and just had patience. Wait for ammonia and nitrites to both read zero for a few days, and you will see nitrates rise...then do a water change and you're good to go.

Purchased and added some live sand today. Should speed thing up a little.

For a new fulter on this 55G what do you think of the Bio-Wheel Power Filter Penguin 350? And honestly, which protien tkimmer is best from experience without a sump?

Unless you clean out that blue filter pad every few days or change it..I dont recommend that thing at all. It will trap crud which decays= nitrates.

Good skimmer ..is the ideal way to go. The sig explains in detail about skimmers for you.

I hear nothing but good things about Octupus HOB and CPR Hob types.

I use the Octopus NW150 in my sump now...love it..

For me what I think is ideal for marine tanks is

Great skimmer (best you can afford)... lots of flow..on a 55 like minimal 3 korilia #3 or higher....ample LR...sand bed ... clean up crews... good to go.

Skimmer and flow work together. Flow will keep detritus in the water column ...while the skimmer sucks the junk out...the longer you keep things suspended the higher the chances it gets skimmed. The last thing you want is for it to settle. Can't stop it 100% ... Flow+skimmer work together very well.
