My friend has a 55 gallon tank collecting dust in his basement after fully investing himself in his 100 gallon SW tank.

I plan on housing some sort of cichlid after it is eventually set up. I am looking for suggestions of what types would be able to be housed in this size tank and how many.

I have looked at some of the following but I do not know much background information:

Americans that interest me:

Firemouth,
Jack Dempsey,
Green Terror,
Texas,

Africans that interest me:

Johanni,
Freiburg's Mbuna,
Electric Yellow

I don't know much about these fish. Do you have any input on if this tank size is appropriate/for how many fish? Also, any other suggestions of other cichlids that could be kept in a tank this size.

Thanks for the help!

most of your americans get too big 8"-12". The africans could be kept 1m/2f.

have you considered an oscar?

I would love to have an oscar but isn't a 55g too small to house an oscar?

Thought so, I'll save the Oscar for my monster-tank-in-planning

The green terror and the texas would most likely have to be a single species tank, You could probably go with a pair of firemouths and a smaller fancy pleco or catfish . The the jd prob the same imo

depending on who you talk to, a 55g isnt too small, the guys at oscarfish all say an oscar can thrive alone in a 55g, i personally am not sure, 13" depth seems a little cramped but i don know, the guys at o fish kno wat theyr talkin about.
