Ok, so i set up and cycled my new 55 gallon tank. I talked to the guy at the fish store, and he said buy some cheap goldfish and get the bacteria and ammmonia levels up. So, i did. Everything is running perfect, so i got two blue lobsters. Turns out, they are BOTH PREGNANT!:jaw-dropping: So, now im freaking out lke they're my soon to be kids,:nilly: and i have no idea how to take care of them, any advice would be MORE than welcome. Should i get rid of the goldfish? Wil mom eat the babies? Im soooo lost!! Thanks!!!

:wall:

I think your goldfish are actually likely to eat the eggs or any babies that hatch.

I fish with crawfish and the ones with eggs get the eggs stripped off by minnows and carp if something doesn't take the crawfish first.
You can provide housing for your crawfish to try and prevent that, such as ceramic pots and pvc tube.

And I'd be kind of worried about them picking on your goldfish, especially if the goldfish are small because they will prey on fish while the fish are sleeping, thus not moving.

Tank Update

Tank Update!!!

Alright, so i gave a bunch of my feeder goldfish that i had in my tank to my buddy who is starting to cycle his tank. I now have just 6 smaller feeders, and my lobsters. I've added some plants, and ground cover for my lobsters ( Which they love to re-arrange). Im thinking about getting some smaller schooling fish, maybe like tinfoil barbs, and a couple of angelfish, just cause they are so :swear: beautiful and look to be very peaceful. But... being the tank newbie that i am, i'm not trying to add fuel to a fire. So, my question is, does anyone know if all of those can be together? Im worried that the lobsters will try to snip at the angelfish.

Goldfish are cold water fish.

Tinfoil barbs are tropical fish they require warmer water. Please consider the comfort of your fish before making mixes like this.

Just a comment on the blue lobster/cray... They are so pretty and the babies are going to be adorable!!! You should consider selling when they are old enough!!

Good Luck

Ps. NO TINFOIL BARBS OR ANGELS!!! Like the Wizard said, they are tropical fish, and would require different parameters!!!

do not get tinfoil barbs as they get over a foot long. you just stalked that tank so be careful and keep up with water changes. the goldfish - feederfish meathod of cycling is very very frowned upon.

:huh:I had no idea that it was frowned upon, this is my very first tank. It wasn't like i killed the fish, or any of them died (except one that got snagged by the lobster), i just let them poop alot and then gave my buddy the fish. They are still doing fine, and he plans on keeping them for awhile. Sry if anybody was offended by that, like i said, honest rookie mistake. The guy at the fish place told me thats how to do it.

Everyone makes mistakes and it's okay:o The first step I would do is try and find the feeder goldies a new home or take them back to the pet store. Then do some research on cycling a tank. It will be a bit more difficult with the lobsters but it's possible. I suggest buying an API liquid test kit so that you can monitor the params if you don't have one already. I would hold off on getting any new fish at least for the time being. Main priority is making sure the lobsters make it and maybe possibly their offspring. Hopefully some more experienced people can give you some better guidance on their care and take you through the steps of cycling.
