New 72 gallon bowfront,FOWLR.

I've had it happen to a fish once and snails a good number of times. Even a few shrimp. You should use the guard, but not the "flow concentrator." The latter defeats the purpose of these wide flow pumps.

Another question.

I've been looking for a protein skimmer around craigslist/ebay. My tank is about 20 ft. away from my bed, and i understand these things can get little noisy. Is the skimmer of any use if i have it set on a timer to be off about 6 hours per night or is it not even worth it ?

I don't see any reason why that would be a problem. Running a skimmer for 18 hours a day should still prove beneficial to a tank that size.

keep us posted plz.

Update.

I finally picked up some more live rock from an established tank. Got it for $3/lb and picked up another 35 lbs. Right now i have 55 lbs total.

When going through the rock the guy had left i put my hand on something kinda mushy and sticky and i checked it out and it turned out to be an anemone. The guy told me i could take it along with that rock if i wanted it otherwise he'd put it on craigslist. Naturally i offered to take it.

So i did some research and it turns out to be a sebae purple tip anemone. It seems to be bleached and must have not been doing well in the guy's tank. After a little more research i find they are very difficult anemones to care for and should be in an established tank of atleast 6 months.

First off, this thing is very tiny, about 2-3 inches in diameter. Added him 2 days ago. First day he was jsut kind of rolling around on he bottom. Then i woke up the next day and he secured himself into a rock actually in a perfect position. First two days he seemed a little deflated and not too lively, but today he seemed much more lively and a little bigger. I tried feeding him a small piece of krill but he held onto it for a minute moving it from tip to tip and finally just let it go. Any tips on feeding? We'll see how this goes, otherwise i'll give it to my buddy whose got an established setup.

Only problem i've been dealing with recently is a horrible diatom algae bloom. I know its very common in new tanks but i've never had it this bad before. Its not hard to get off of the sand. But is there an easy way to get it off of the live rock? Also any tips on getting rid of this stuff?

BTW, params are:
pH- 8.2
Ammo/Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 5-10
Temp- 77 F
Salinity - 1.023

Will get some pics hopefully tonight.

Try a fish-based meat, like silversides, and make sure you chop it very, very finely, especially for an ailing/starved anemone. Gently place a little piece onto the tentacles and allow it to ingest the food. If it takes the food, that is one step in the right direction. I recommend feeding every other day, especially while the anemone is in its current condition. It should look more like this when it is healthier:

Thanks Amph

That looks a lot healthier and larger than mine at the momment. I will try the silversides. It's been taking hold of the krill as soon as it's near any of their tentacles and hold onto it for about a minute and then just let it go. Kept trying to give it to him too and he'd keep taking it, but just wouldnt eat it. Stubborn lol. Hopefully the silversides work.

Great pic Amp, is/was that yours?

davexstumpe - I know the diatoms are unsightly but they should go away soon. How is the flow in the tank? Increasing that would be my first step if its on the low side. Other than that, I have found that my conchs did a great job with diatoms on the sand and the blue dot sea hare I added (you can see a pic on my thread I just updated) has decimated the diatoms on my rocks as well as some other small algae patches).

Right now i have a Koralia 3(850 gph), and a ViaAqua 2600 (740 gph). Can't wait to get rid of hte viaaqua but i did get it for free.
That's about 22x an hour.

Also have a penguin 330, and a penguin 200 filtering the tank now while i figure out what to do with the wet/dry filter that i took down.

I'll give it a a few weeks and hopefully it gets better. Otherwise i'll look for something like that sea hare, very interesting. I checked that out in your post.

Alright guys. Diatoms are pretty much gone (thank goddd)
bright neon green algae has been coming (though not as bad) but i can only see the algae when looking through 2 panes of glass. for example ... i can't see the algae on the side when looking from the side, i can only see the algae on the side when looking through the front of the glass. i dont know if that makes sense? well it does to me.

Bunch of good news. Added that live rock about a week ago, and still no traces of ammonia or nitrites at all. And nitrates still about 5.
Also, i found a few HHs from the rock. Something small was hangin out the other night and when i turned on the light i saw it for a splitsecond as it creeped back in a crevice in the rock. Couldn't even really tell you what it looked like but i will try to catch it again. Found about 12 hermits/snails and i also found what looks like a red mushroom peeking out of the back of the rock. Rock also has beginnings of coraline, so i got a great deal on that.

Anyway. Will be taking pics tonight so will update this thread.

Lastly, found a skimmer someone is selling for $100. it's an AquaC Remora with a mag 5 pump. It is used. Is this a good deal and are used skimmers as good as new? or should i just spend the extra $ on a new one?
