I am setting up a new 90 gallon tank this fall and would like to have both Rams and Neons. Do you think it would be possible to have a shell dweller such as a Neolamprologus Brevis? And I need suggestion on filtering. I have a AquaClear 110/500 and a Hydor/Proqautics 20 (160gph). Will both those filters be enough to maintain the 90. I appreciated it will depend on how many fish and my hope is to add some live plants to help the tank along.

Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

well, you have a lot of options, because the rams and neons are both peaceful. If you are up for the challenge, you could house a few beautiful discus fish in the tank, but I should warn you, they definitely need the right conditions. Some other fish that are beautiful additions to aquariums are dwarf gouramis, Rainbow fish, Killifish. In a tank that size, you could also do a set of live bearers too (1 male to 2-3 females), and experience baby fishes as well (mollies, platies, guppies, swordtails)

As far as your filtration goes, you want it to cycle your water 6-7 times per hour. using these two filters should be more than adequate for your tank, and should not give you any problems.

Hope the info helps.
P.S. check out www.liveaquaria.com
I always find info on fish I am looking to buy there.

Please keep your suggestions coming. I have thought lots over the past few weeks about the Discus, but I am not able to commit the time to these beautiful fish and I question my skill level. I have read that I should get 4-7 discus in a tank for thier social satisfaction???

^^ yea thats true, and that means your looking at $200+

I have been seriously researching Discus as I would love to have a "Discus Tank".

I originally thought of having a couple in my main tank.
Now that I have researched them - it would not work. They need almost perfect water conditions - water changes daily or every second day at least with aged water.

Their requirements are not a good 'fit' for my main tank - so I am currently looking for a new tank. I have found some local breeders that I will check out once the tank is setup and stable.
One breeder said that I lived so close he would deliver the Discus instead of shipping them - cool.

Unless you were going to get a full grown Discus - and be prepared to do a lot more maintenance on your tank - I would not go that route.

I would not go discus, too much work. How about 4 or 5 baby angels. Make sure that they are babies so that they don't go after the neons as food. If they grow up with the neons, they should not be considered food (hopefully)

I'd go with 5 Discus, Pair of GBRs, Pair of Gold Rams, 14 tetras (i'd go with rummies because they really look great and are the best schoolers but if you like neons i'd atleast consider the more colorful cardinals), and 12 Panda Corys.

Or pretty much what i have in my tank minus the discus. :grinyes:

And what is your substrate goign to be? I recently changed over from white to black gravel, and it really brought out my GBRs and Gold Ram's color.

As for filtration, i like my water to be cycled abpit 10X per hour.
