Followed your other thread and ended here.

A major difference between African and American cichlids is there social interaction - American's form pairs whilst African's need harems at least (1M, 3F).

With a 60g you could do 3 groups of different species at the ratio above, try something like a Labidochromis sp, Pseudotropheus sp, and Cynotiliapia sp. Try not to mix 2 species as they may well interbreed. Also try to keep different colour patterns too.

You will need a lot more rocks, either 2-3 piles stacked high, or cover the back full of rocks. Lava rocks good and light, texas holey rock not bad (but little fish get stuck and can die), river rocks are good too.

Good luck and enjoy.

Congrats on the fish !

Hard to tell from those pics - the blotchy fellow is likely literally that, Aulonocara Orange Blotch or 'O.B.' (in the States often referred to as 'Orange Blossom' for cosmetic reasons :D). He looks like a hybrid. The 'O.B.' Aulonocaras are tank bred for colour scheme and not naturally occurring in the Lake.

The barred fish in the second pic down has a touch of Lake Victoria to him as well as a lot of Aulonocara; I am thinking it is a hybrid of some sort.

The seventh down looks like an Aulonocara 'German Red' or 'Eureka' (same fish) which is a colour morph Aulonocara Jacobfreiberg and I say that mostly based on the distinct white edging on the pectoral fins...but again it is pretty impossible to tell from those pics, and it may also be a hybrid.

All of them have large dash of Haplochromine (another Lake Malawi Genus) around the nose and face, which is why I think they are hybrids.

Clearer pics would really help discuss them more accurately.

Good luck with them !

Doh :duh:

There's me rambling on about mbuna (Lake Malawi), since that was what you were talking about in the other thread. Didn't look at the pics much as I was at work.

There's only a handful of mbuna that can go in with peacocks, as mbuna are a lot more agressive - Yellow Labs, Ps. acei, and Rusties.

But mbuna are rock dwelling fish and peacocks are open water...one from Lake Malawi, the others Lake Victoria. The general thumb is not to mix lakes (a bit like not mixing continents too - wrt African and American cichlids).

In fact both Aulonocara and Mbuna are Malawis, and endemic to that lake.

You can mix lakes but its a bit hit and miss and not recommended as likely to succeed. Lake Malawi is more likely to succeed with Victoria than either to Lake Tanganyika.

The Peacocks like their rocks too - its the larger haplochromines that need large areas of swimming space.

How big is the tank anyway ?
